Crusher Prohibition

The UK’s Health & Safety Executive has hit a Scottish (non-NFDC member) company with a prohibition notice following a site visit that identified “various hazards” including Whole Body Vibration, dust and noise.
The prohibition note states: "...not a Safe System Of Work .for employee required to "pick" extraneous material (wood, steel) from construction waste being fed into the mobile Extec 10 crusher while crusher is operating. The "Picker" is exposed to various hazards including fall from height or being pulled in to the crusher, there is also a significant risk to the picker from projectiles and splintering from crusher jaws, also no there is no protection from the health risks as a result of Dust, Noise, Whole Body Vibration, Immediate PN prohibiting use of person to pick the material from the feed hopper of the crusher whilst the crusher is operating..."
The prohibition notice comes hot on the heels of the publication of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors’ crusher guidance note that recommends that operators are not onboard the machine while it is in operation.
